Drug Interactions

1. Antacids

Ciprofloxacin eye drops may interact with antacids that contain aluminum, magnesium, or calcium. These antacids can decrease the absorption of ciprofloxacin into the bloodstream, reducing its effectiveness. It is recommended to separate the use of ciprofloxacin eye drops and antacids by at least 2 hours to avoid this interaction.

2. Corticosteroids

The concomitant use of ciprofloxacin eye drops and corticosteroids such as prednisone or dexamethasone may increase the risk of tendonitis or tendon rupture. It is important to inform your healthcare provider if you are using any corticosteroid medications before starting treatment with ciprofloxacin eye drops.

3. Probenecid

Probenecid, a medication used to treat gout, may increase the concentration of ciprofloxacin in the blood by inhibiting its renal excretion. This can lead to an increased risk of side effects. Your healthcare provider may need to adjust the dosage of ciprofloxacin if you are also taking probenecid.

4. Theophylline

Ciprofloxacin eye drops may increase the levels of theophylline, a medication used to treat asthma and other respiratory conditions. This can result in increased side effects of theophylline, such as restlessness, tremors, and increased heart rate. Close monitoring of theophylline levels and adjustment of dosage may be necessary when using ciprofloxacin eye drops concurrently.

5. Warfarin

Ciprofloxacin eye drops may enhance the effects of warfarin, an anticoagulant medication. This can increase the risk of bleeding. It is important to monitor your INR (International Normalized Ratio) closely if you are taking warfarin along with ciprofloxacin eye drops. Your healthcare provider may need to adjust your warfarin dosage accordingly.
